Stinson 10A Hayes brakes

Post by dblystone » Tue May 21, 2019 6:52 pm

Hello, I am working on a 10A that has Hayes brakes. So far on the left side one brake shoe and one spring clip are broken. Are there replacement brake shoes and clips available?
Also if not is there a STC available for this model of Stinson to replace the brake system?

Dblystone,

I cursed those Hayes brakes the whole time we owned our 10A, back in the 60's/early 70's. The old expander tubes lost their resilience and the brakes constantly dragged. I can almost guarantee that most if not all the 10A's that are flying today have Cleveland brakes. I don't know about any STC's, though. I would think considering the safety aspect of having reliable brakes that you could find a FSDO that would approve a 337.

I have searched FAA's STC listing and found one STC for some models of 10 Stinson under STC SA2691 SO.
This may give you some place to start looking.

I'll see if I can find anything in my "Baby Stinson Trove".

I have a copy of a 337 for installing Cleveland Brakes on a HW-75, N23792
There is also an older 337 for a different HW-75 in my doc collection. I'll put together a PDF binder this weekend and upload to the Stinson Club Website.

This is not my aircraft, it's part of the documentation I received from Dale Jewett.

Brian,
Dale gave me a ride in his HW-75 a few years ago. The only baby Stinson I have been in, but as I have said earlier, all Stinsons basically fly the same:
very stable and all at about the same speeds.
I have ridden in: A 1929 Stinson Jr.
Dale's HW-75 A beautiful airplane!
High wing Tri-motor
The late Don Maxfield's V77 Gull Wing
Stinson 108; 108-1; 108-2 and 108-3 (I have flown all of these)
My only glider experience was in a 2 place Schwitzer (sp?) pulled aloft by a Stinson L-5

Dale is a great guy. I am glad that his data is going to be accessable to all Stinson lovers.
